My father, Frank Nicholas Dalotto, was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 22, 1906 and died from cancer on December 26, 1953 at the age of 47. He is buried in St. Mary’s cemetery in South Beach, Staten Island
His father Pasquale Dalotto emigrated from Italy, in 1902, from the parish of Canna, the province of Cosenza, in the region of Calabria. Calabria is in the south of Italy, on the toe of the booth shaped outline of Italy. He was born in 1875 and died in 1948 from a stroke. He is buried in St. John’s cemetery in Ridgewood, Queens, NYC.
His father (my great grandfather) was Luigi and his wife (my Great Grandmother was Lora Palazza). My father’s mother, Philomena (Fannie), also emigrated from Italy in 1902 and was born on Feb 15th, 1869. She died on November 7, 1934 from Pneumonia. Her Father was Francesco Molintero and her mother was Marie Dominico. Grandpa Dalotto later took on a second wife.
According to the 1930 Federal census, my grandfather owned the multi-family apartment house they lived in on Ellery Street in Brooklyn with a value of $6,500.
My grandfather had a brother Antonio who also emigrated from Italy in 1913.
My Father had four sisters and a brother. The oldest sister, Laura was born in Italy on October 12, 1897 and died in Dec, 1989. She married John Martinetti and had three children; Mary, Nicholas, and Faye.
My father’s second oldest sister Mary, was born in Italy on April 18, 1901 and died in July, 1995. She had Alzheimer’s disease at the time of her death. She married Frank Fonda and they had no children.
My father’s youngest sister, Mildred, was born in Brooklyn on March 22, 1909 and died on April 21, 1999. She had Alzheimer’s disease at the time of her death. She married Sal Mattera and had three children; Marie, Sal, Faye and Gerard.
My father’s brother Louis, was born in Italy on April 4, 1899 and died in May, 1977. He came to this country in 1902. He married Florence Heydecker and they had three children, George, Philomena and Robert. The fourth sister, Celia, died from cancer in 1938. She had four children with her husband Charlie Raneiri; Tommy, Fay, Eleanor and Camella.
My mother’s father, Giuseppe D’Abramo was born in Italy in 1885 and died in March, 1964, at the age of 79, in Staten Island, NY from diabetes. He emigrated from Italy on August 10, 1907 and entered Ellis Island, NY from the parish of Manduria, the Provinceof Taranto, in the Apulia region of Italy.
My mother’s mother Maria Mero was also born in Manduria, Italy in 1892 and died around 1962 in Staten Island, NY from cancer.
My Grandfather also had a brother, Pietro, and had five children, Palma, John, Ralph, Conchetta, Joseph and Sal. My Grandmother had a sister, Anna Mero who married Albert Schirano and had no children.
Apulia (Puglia) is located on the Adriatic Sea, at the spur and heel of the Italian boot. The Apulia region has extensive vine and olive covered plains growing some of Italy's most robust wines. Apulia is mostly a plain but the mountainous Gargano Peninsula breaks through its low coast to the north. There are mountains in the north central part of the region Apulia’s coast is lined with many beaches and offers the most variety of the southern regions, equal in wealth and artistic talent to the north.
Apulia produces more wine than any other Italian region usually making up around 17% of the national total.
My grandmother’s mother was Concepita Abbatematteo who spent most of her life in Manduria, Apulia, Italy. She came to the U.S. three times, twice aboard ship in steerage, landing in Ellis Island. The first time she came to the United States she brought Grandma Maria at the age of 16 to marry my grandfather. On the same trip brought my Aunt Anna, aged 14, to marry my uncle Albert. She then returned to Italy to visit again in 1913. The last time she came was around 1950 to spend her remaining life with my grandparents until she died, around 1960, when she was 99 years old. I remember her being an alert, feisty old lady who always wore black to morn her deceased husband, although, I’m not sure if this was her first or second husband since her last name was different then her two daughters. She did not speak English, though I suspected she always understood what people were saying in English.
My mother had two brothers; John who was born in 1911 and died in 1994. He married Rose Demonte and they had no children.
Her other brother Leonard, was born in 1925 and died around 1960. He never married, having spent most of his life in a mental institution.
